Police say the vehicle driven by an 87 year old Walpole resident was headed north on Route 12 and suddenly swerved into the southbound lane colliding with riders. The crash took the lives of 59 year old Gary Champney of Alstead, and 41 year old Aaron Rowbar of Newport.
Five other people injured in the crash suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police say two of the five injured were airlifted to nearby hospitals, one being sent to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and the other to Mass General Hospital in Boston Massachusetts.
According to witnesses those taking part in the ride were part of the "Ride for the Fallen" meant to honor the memory of Newport native, Army Specialist Justin Rollins who was killed in Iraq in 2007.
By late afternoon the crash site of Route 12 and Depot Road and Route 63 remains closed until investigators have completed their investigation. In the meantime detours set up around the area remain and in place.
