Idol champ Phillip Phillips leaves hospital

American Idol winner Phillip Phillips is on the road to recovery after leaving hospital following kidney stone surgery.

The 21-year-old singer, who claimed victory on the talent contest last month, underwent a six-and-a-half hour operation to remove several large stones last Wednesday.

He was released from hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday and is now at home resting up before he embarks on the 45-date American Idol summer tour.

He tells E! News, "I'm out of the hospital and back to work! Looking forward to the future."

Phillips' first trek, which will feature the top 10 contestants from the 11th American Idol season, kicks off on 6 July in Detroit, Michigan. (PAW/WNWE/MT)
