Shooting breaks out near Texas A&M University
(Reuters) - Multiple people, including law enforcement officers, were shot on Monday when a gunman opened fire near Texas A&M University in College Station, police said.
"Officers have been injured, civilians - I don't know the number - have been injured," said Officer Jon Agnew, a spokesman for the police department in the neighboring city of Bryan.
Police had a shooting suspect in custody, according to the university's website. Agnew said officials think that suspect was the only gunman but that officials were searching the neighborhood to be sure.
"The situation is calm right now," Agnew said. "We think the situation is under control."
The extent of victims' injuries was not clear.
On the police scanner, a dispatcher told officers, "We have two officers down that we know of and one female that's been shot in her vehicle."
The university issued a "code maroon" shortly after noon, warning students and employees that an "active shooter" was in the area west of campus and asking them to stay away.
The gunman fired from inside a home about two blocks from the campus, according to the university's alert.
"We have been told to stay put," said Keith Randall, a Texas A&M employee who was in his office. "They just asked us to stay where we are."
