Cinemaniac Tom Cook's Quick Picks

NOW IN THEATERS

PIRANHA 3D

Oscar nominated Elisabeth Shue, tough guy Ving Rhames, and mad scientistChristopher Lloyd discover that an undersea earthquake has opened an ancient cave filled with deadly (and hungry) piranha, threatening their college vacation town – ALL IN 3D. Amazingly grizly, loaded with total nudity, this is one to wait for on video. (5 of 10)

THE LAST EXORCISM

A no-name but sufficient cast add to this sometimes intriguing, mostly lopsided and disjointed account of a charlatan priest struggling with his faith.(4 of 10)

NOW ON VIDEO

CITY ISLAND

Amidst a dysfunctional family, Andy Garcia is a prison guard struggling with dream of being an actor when he learns his long-ago abandoned illegitimate son turns up in his own prison. Sounds serious, but this ultimately light-hearted, wonderful story is a real gem! (8 of 10)

THE BACK-UP PLAN

Jennifer Lopez is a wanna-be mom who can’t find the right guy, so she elects artficial means to get pregnant – then finds the right guy. The term “Oops” described her timing in the film and your decision if you rent this snoozer. (1 of 10)

MARMADUKE

Owen Wilson voices-over the thoughts of the title canine in this insipid waste of time. Perhaps young (emphasize the “young”) kids might enjoy the simplistic humor and Wilson’s characteristic deadpan annoying cadences, but adults should schedule dental surgery instead. (1 of 10)

HARRY BROWN

Michael Caine is his usual engaging self in this month’s offering of a British widower stuck in the slums of England as youth-led gangs terrorize the aging residents. Caine takes the law into his own hands seeking revenge for the death of his friend, meeting up with some of the most vile and reprehensive characters ever brought to the screen. (7 of 10)
